Évolution des normes de mesure des odeurs et des composés odorants

Abstract : Odour analysis is still a singular method because based on sensorial analysis using human nose as detector. This specificity defines this measurement method as olfactometry. The actual standard needs improvements explaining the revision process in progress. But olfactometry cannot be applied for all odorous situations and therefore new complementary standards are proposed for applications where olfactometry is not appropriate. It must be noted that standards concern measurement methodologies and do not fix limit values of exhaust or odour exposure because this aspect depends on regulation. Different countries may use the same standard as measurement method with different air quality objectives.In this field of odour measurement, French standard evolution is linked to European evolution in the frame of European Committee for Standardization (CEN/TC264 Air quality). In this committee, the standard on odour measurement by dynamic olfactometry is currently being revised. A new standard to determine odour in ambient air by using field inspection by a “plume” or by a “grid” method is under publication and another working group has started to elaborate a standard on instrumental odour monitoring.
