VOC sorption on indoor floorings and consequence on indoor air quality

To investigate the interaction of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) with indoor surfaces (i.e., sinks), the sorption parameters of formaldehyde and toluene were assessed on five floorings (2 PVCs, 2 rubbers and 1 linoleum) by an experimental method based on successive short samplings using solid-phase microextraction (SPME) in an airtight emission cell. Adsorption and desorption rate constants, as well as, the partition coefficient were assessed for all the VOC/material couples showing contrasted sorption behaviors. A rubber flooring was identified as a sink of formaldehyde characterized by a very low desorption constant close to 0 h -1 . For the sorbent floorings identified, the adsorption rates of formaldehyde are from 2 to 4 times higher than those of toluene. Considering the partition coefficient, several floorings tested have an adsorption capacity of formaldehyde much higher than that of toluene. The results of modelling showed that at the scale of room, the formaldehyde sorption can have a maximum contribution on indoor air quality up to 15 to 21%.
