Optical rules in high speed imaging for digital image correlation applied to drop weight impact testing

Résumé

High speed imagers are broadly used for digital image correlation, whether in fluid mechanics or in solid mechanics. The right balance between image resolution and temporal resolution must be achieved to reach the final confidence in DIC measurements. Camera exposure time or laser pulse is freezing the possible correlation pattern displacement blur. Golden rules of high speed imaging will be recalled and applied to a drop weight impact test on composite materials. Same image sequence is computed with different temporal sampling or resolution to show the effect on DIC processing.
