Mapping of the vulnerability to pollution of aquifers in a mining area : Afema gold mine case (South-eastern Côte d'Ivoire)

Abstract : The mining industry is a main sector for economic and social development of a country. However, this industry generates many negative impacts on human and biophysical environments. Located southeast of Côte d'Ivoire, the old gold mine of Afema, operated from 1992 to 1998, was assigned to another mining company for a new operation. Prior to reexploitation, study was conducted in 2013 and involving only environmental impacts study. The aspect of vulnerability to groundwater pollution was not addressed in this study. To overcome this shortcoming and to better know the natural predisposition to pollution, mapping of the intrinsic aquifer vulnerability was carried out. The processing of data from drilling data, chemical data, map and satellite images as well as using the DRASTIC method have established the vulnerability map of Afema area. The mineralized zones were overlaid with the vulnerability map, revealing that the study area is dominated by the classes of high and medium vulnerability. Indeed these classes occupy respectively 53.5 and 45.4% of the study area (850 km 2), while extreme classes (very low and very high) are hardly encountered in the region. Low vulnerability class accounts only for 1.1% of the total area. The high vulnerability class coincides with high mineralization area. This result reflected a high risk of groundwater pollution around the shear zone. This study has enabled to highlight areas vulnerable to pollution involving attention in the future exploitation of the ore.
